"Box Top Art"
Messerschmitt Bf 109E-7, German

In this painting depicting a scene from the Battle of Britain, a Messerschmitt Bf 109E being flown by Unteroffizier Klick is about to be shot down by RAF fighters in the famous September 15, 1940 raids on London.

The style and composition of this painting pays homage to the great box top art of the 1950’s model kits. This art sent the imagination of pre-teen boys soaring. Many a boy took the model kit home, built the model, and then afterward cut out the box top and pinned the art on the wall above his bed.
