"The Fastest Fighter"
Lockheed YF-12A ‘Blackbird’

In 1960 Kelly Johnson, head of Lockheed’s ‘Skunk Works’, proposed to the Air Force a fighter interceptor version of the CIA’s A-12 ‘Spy Plane’ (prior to the SR-71 Air Force version). Three test aircraft were built and successfully made numerous interceptions. The YF-12A consistently destroying its target with a single missile from 120 miles range. Although the program was ultimately canceled, in May 1965 the YF-12A set nine speed and altitude records earning the right to the title “the fastest fighter”.
